Silent Post Dialogue: The Spiral of Knowledge between Two-Handed Ink and Secret Beethoven
Silent Post between Bonn and Cologne
For some time now, the artist Ricarda Rommerscheidt (Bonn) and the sound designer Kai Niggemann (Cologne) have been engaged in a special artistic dialogue. The principle of 'Silent Post' serves as the engine: Ricarda translates the impulses of Ludwig van Beethoven's works into multi-layered ink drawings. She sends these visual works to Kai, who – without knowing the underlying work – musically interprets the drawing and returns it as a sound loop. A cycle of listening, seeing, and responding.
Sound Carpet Dialogue: The Spiral of Knowledge between Two-Handed Ink and Secret Beethoven
Kai's loop spins in my ear, a vortex of repetition and renewal. The concept of the spiral of insight comes to mind: A circling where we seemingly pass the familiar point only to realize that the movement has carried us to a higher level. Insight is not a flash of genius; it is a maturation process, a patient penetration of the layers. Did Beethoven go this way? I see him before me, grinding motives until only the skeleton of truth remains – a struggle between inner turmoiland ultimate silence.
Tactile dialogues and ambidexterity
In my response drawing, this struggle becomes physical. I work with both hands using different pen thicknesses: delicacy on the left, dominance on the right. Two voices enter into a dialogue – they entwine, repel each other, merge in the black of the ink. Chaos and calm, day and night, the cycle of life. Kai Niggemann liked the "depth gradation" of the drawing; now I am curious how he will respond musically.
Collaborative process: The riddle of the source
Here lies the charm of our continued game of telephone: The spirit of Beethoven is our common companion, but the concrete work that guides my hand remains my secret. In my mind, I throw this visual riddle to him: "Kai, do you find the rhythm of my two-handed hunt in your controls again?" And I imagine him responding at the other end of the line: "Ricarda, I see the attack dynamics of your strokes. I search for the background noise of your gesture. My oscillator is already trembling – I respond to you in waveform."
Ricarda
