What goes through my mind?

13 January 2026 | Tina Altus (Leipzig)

What goes through my mind?
I try to sketch it.

On his study trip in 1796, there were already botanical gardens in all the cities visited. Beethoven's visit to the Prònay Garden in Prague is definitely documented, where an old plane tree reminds of him.

He must have often strolled in the botanical garden of the University of Vienna, which was very close to his places of work near Hetzen dorf. He also stayed in the villa of Baron Sigismund von Prònay, who ran one of the most significant private botanical gardens of the Biedermeier period. That was 1823 (March to August).

What birds sang in the gardens at that time, which may not be heard today?

Will I succeed in depicting quail, nightingale, and yellowhammer from blossoms, because that's my métier... I immerse myself in my floral worlds... what flowers were there... there are flowers named after Beethoven, (Aha!) in my garden a Mozart rose blooms, ... Hmmmm. Yessss ... lush and expansive, I really like it, because it is a wild climbing delicate beauty, adored and loved by bees and bumblebees.

I discovered yesterday that there is also a Beethoven rose and it will probably move into my garden. Both will benefit from it. What will the blackbird incorporate into his song and sound when I play Beethoven's Pastoral or the Ninth to him every day..., I'm thinking of an experiment first in my garden....

Eventually, a Beethoven-studded floral artwork will emerge. Yes, I'm also thinking of a portrait with flowers.
