Freedom in sounds: Dresden honors Beethoven 2027 with symphony marathon

19 March 2026 | Dresden Stadt-Marketing

After our conversation with the project management of the BEETHOVEN - ART TOUR, we were able to integrate this exciting project journey into our B2B newsletter in French, Dutch, and Italian. We already have a publication from Italy: Dresden 2026/27 – A unique experience of art, music, and entertainment awaits you.

Beethoven's birthday 2027 in Dresden

Beethoven is closely associated with Bonn, his birthplace, and Vienna, where he had a lasting impact on music history. But Dresden also played a significant role in his life and the reception of his work. In 2027, on the 200th anniversary of Beethoven's death, the Saxon capital will honor these connections with a high-caliber concert program.

In April 1796, Beethoven spent a week in Dresden. He performed at the Saxon court in the Dresden Residenzschloss, where he was celebrated for his extraordinary piano talent. The city is also closely linked to the literary roots of its Ninth Symphony: (...) Friedrich Schiller composed the Ode to Joy there, a poem that Beethoven later used in the choral finale, which became a symbol of European unity. Fidelio, Beethoven's only opera, holds a special place in the city's history, especially during the Peaceful Revolution of 1989.

In 2027, the Semperoper, together with the Staatskapelle Dresden under the direction of Daniele Gatti, will perform all of Beethoven's symphonies, and the Dresden Philharmonic will dedicate major concerts to him.

Dresden is also participating in the European cultural project "Beethoven Art Tour", an international touring initiative that brings together artists from the fields of music, visual arts, theater, and literature.
